But there is a major difference here that you should consider when reaching out to establish direct relationships: the biggest hurdle to overcome from the perspective of the merchant isn’t a cash payment (as it is with advertising) but rather an administrative burden.
In November 1994, CDNow launched its BuyWeb program. CDNow had the idea that music-oriented websites could review or list albums on their pages that their visitors might be interested in purchasing. 3) Competitor Affiliate Rates – In the business of selling physical items, affiliate commission rates average from 3-15% but I've seen as low as 1% and as high as 50% depending on the industry and product markup. For digital products, it's not uncommon to offer 25-75% commissions, but I've seen as high as 90% (or even 100%) and as low as 3%. As you can see, there's no universal standard affiliate commission. Launched on the Prodigy Network in 1989, PC Flowers & Gifts remained on the service until 1996. By 1993, PC Flowers & Gifts generated sales in excess of $6 million per year on the Prodigy service. In 1998, PC Flowers and Gifts developed the business model of paying a commission on sales to the Prodigy Network.
